Project Description

Lot 6 of the Brienza Bypass is fundamental in completing the road linking the Sicignano – Potenza Motorway access road with the A3 Motorway, or more precisely, with Di Fondo Valle Agri State Highway SS 598 leading to the Atena Lucana Motorway access road because it offers the city of Potenza a useful motorway access alternative.  The work was commissioned to create a variant to transiting Potenza Province’s busy Brienza area currently traversed by Potenza Province SS 95 that avoids the series of 90°curves that obviously cause frequent traffic jams and slowdowns.

The work involves some 4.5 km of road and two consecutive tunnels: the San Giuliano Tunnel, 990 m long, and the Casola Tunnel, 776 m long. These two tunnels are separated by 200 m of open valley. The rest of the work regards the construction of six viaducts with a Corten steel structure and cast concrete slab 830 m long and spans of from 75 to 90 m long with piers reaching heights of 25 m on steep ridges in valleys over 80 m deep. The work envisioned includes the construction of a series of gabion cage walls at the foot and embankments to contain the encumbrances of reinforced soils often higher than 20 meters. The intervention will be completed by a series of minor works, hydraulic control structures, and important environmental mitigation works consisting in the laying of soundproof barriers and large areas of reforestation along all the areas involved.

Operations include the construction of the main axis of a secondary Category C1 intercity road with lanes 3.75 wide and verges 1.50 m wide to the right and left.
