The Jonica State Highway SS 106 from Taranto to Reggio Calabria is 491 km long, 39 of which run through the Puglia Region, 37 through Basilicata, and 415 km through Calabria. ANAS has already widened it to 4 lanes, with a CNR Type III a traffic divider for the entire section in Puglia (39 km). An upgrade to 4 lanes with a CNR Type III traffic divider for 32 km has already been completed in the Basilicata Region with another 5 km still to be finished.

ANAS has also upgraded a 12 km section to four lanes (CNR Type III) in the Calabria Region up to the border with Basilicata Region, while calls for tenders for the completion of the variant section around the Roccella Jonica urban area are currently underway

An upgrade with Type B section of the standards set forth in Ministerial Decree 5.11.2001 is envisioned for the remainder of Jonica SS 106 in Calabria Region.

Some of the 12 extra-size lots remaining for the construction of the New Jonica Highway in Calabria have already been awarded, whereas others still await designation of General Contractor, and other works must be assigned through a complementary call.
